300 acres marijuana

300-Acre Pot Plantation Seized In Northern Mexico

Mexican soldiers have found the largest marijuana plantation ever detected in Mexico -- a huge field covering almost 300 acres, said Mexico's Defense Department.

The plantation is four times larger than the previous record discovery by authorities at a ranch in northern Chihuahua state in 1984.

The pot plants sheltered under black screen-cloth in a huge square on the floor of the Baja California desert, more than 250 kilometers south of Tijuana, across the border from San Diego.

Gen. Alfonso Duarte said the screening, which is often used by regular farmers to protect crops from too much sun or heat, made it difficult to detect from the air what was growing underneath. It was only when soldiers on the ground reached the isolated area Tuesday that they found thousands of pot plants as high as 2.5 meters tall. The average height of the plants was about 1.5 meters. Duarte said they were not yet ready for harvest.

“We estimate that in this area, approximately 60 people were working. When they saw the military personnel, they fled,” Duarte told reporters. A few were later reportedly detained at a nearby roadblock, but Duarte said no arrests were made at the scene.

He said traffickers could have harvested about 120 tons of marijuana from the plantation, worth about 1.8 billion pesos (about $160 million).

Video of the plantation showed a sophisticated system of piped-in irrigation to support the plants, which Duarte said was fed by two wells. The plantation also included some wooden outbuildings, presumably for use by people caring for the plants.

Troops will destroy the fields by burning them, said Duarte.

The site is the near the coastal town of San Quintin.

While it’s unknown how much of Mexican drug cartels’ income comes from marijuana, recent discoveries suggest it remains a large-scale trade.

Last October, Mexican authorities made their largest-ever seizure of marijuana packaged for sale, a record 148 tons found in a number of tractor trailers and houses in Tijuana. They appeared to make up a major distribution center traced directly to Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Mexico’s most-wanted fugitive, who has expanded the reach of his Sinaloa cartel along the U.S.-Mexico border since escaping from prison in 2001.

A snake with two heads, each able to think and eat separately and even steal food from each other, has become a popular attraction at a Ukrainian zoo.

The small albino California Kingsnake, now on show in the Black Sea resort of Yalta is quite a handful, zoo workers told AFP.

The snake’s two heads are fiercely independent, are not always in agreement and like to snatch food from each other, said keepers of the private zoo, called Skazka, or Fairy Tale.

“Sometimes one head wants to crawl in one direction and the other head in another direction,” zoo director Oleg Zubkov told AFP.

Zoo worker Ruslan Yakovenko added that he tries to feed the snake’s two heads separately as they sometimes fight for food.

“If it is really hungry, its heads may steal food from each other,” he said, adding he also needs to separate the heads with a barrier.

“The second head may get angry, but both then feel satiation because they only have one stomach,” he told AFP.

The private zoo said kingsnakes hunt other reptiles, meaning one of the snake’s head could instinctively try to attack and eat the other one.

The three-year-old, two-foot-long (60 centimetre) reptile is on loan from Germany.

Visitor numbers had nearly doubled since it went on display in early July, said zoo keeper Yakovenko.

“Many enter the zoo feeling horrified and leave delighted.”

The snake, believed to be Europe’s only two-headed snake, will be on show in Ukraine until September.

Roller coaster war vet dies

DARIEN, N.Y. - A U.S. Army veteran who lost his legs while deployed in Iraq was thrown from a 200-foot-tall roller coaster at an upstate theme park on Friday and was killed.
James Thomas Hackemer, 29, was ejected from the Ride of Steel roller coaster at the Darien Lake Theme Park Resort, located between Buffalo and Rochester, at about 5:30 p.m., the Genesee County sheriff's office said.
The park confirmed a guest "came out of the Ride of Steel roller coaster" and said it was "saddened to report that the guest has passed." It said local authorities and its safety experts were investigating.
The park's website describes the Ride of Steel as one of the tallest coasters east of the Mississippi River, climbing 208 feet and reaching speeds in excess of 70 mph.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jerry Springer is caught in the Casey Anthony media frenzy and, he says, for no reason.

Springer dismissed a report that his TV show is offering $1 million to Anthony and her parents as "100 percent fabricated."

The host of "The Jerry Springer Show" said Friday his syndicated program does not feature "known people" such as Anthony.

The 25-year-old woman was acquitted Tuesday of killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2008. The trial and verdict drew heavy media coverage, and a scramble for the first interview with Anthony is expected.

Anthony is scheduled for release from jail in Florida on July 17. She was convicted of four misdemeanor counts of lying to law enforcement but received credit for time-served and good behavior.

I was chatting with Melissa from CupcakesOMG! last week about food photography---cameras, techniques, etc. I've also been submitting several recipes and pictures to TasteSpotting, foodgawker and Photograzing. It got me thinking a lot about food photography.
I'm not the best authority on food photography, and my pictures are far from perfect, but I have taken several photography courses over the years.
