Cleveland Browns wide receiver/punt returner Josh Cribbs left the
team’s Thursday Night Football game against the division rival Baltimore
Ravens after a devastating blow that left Cribbs unconscious. Ravens
linebacker Dannell Ellerbe made the hit in the first quarter.
Cribbs was returning a kick when Ellerbe lowered his shoulder
directly into the head of Cribbs. Cribbs’ helmet went flying before he
fell to the turf and cracked the back of his head off of the field.
Cribbs fumbled the ball as a result of the hit and the Ravens recovered.
It was a legal hit from Ellerbe and the tackle did not result in a penalty flag being thrown.
Cribbs was eventually able to get back to his feet and walk off the
field under his own power after initially laying on the field
unconscious.
While Ellerbe, who was visibly upset after the hit, was not hit with a
penalty, two players – Ravens safety James Ihedigbo and the Browns’
defensive back Johnson Bademosi were each flagged for personal fouls.
