MLB playoff picture

With just 10 days left in baseball’s regular season, only two of eight playoffs have been wrapped up. The Philadelphia

Phillies have won the National League East and the Detroit Tigers have wrapped up the American League Central, but ten teams have a realistic shot at the last six spots. The Milwaukee Brewers are the closest to clinching next.

Here’s a breakdown of the magic numbers and remaining schedule for the 10 teams that still have a chance at making it to the 2011 World Series:

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Philadelphia Phillies – Clinched the NL East. Their magic number to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs is 1.
Remaining Games: (4 HOME / 6 away – 4vsWAS, 3@nym, 3@atl)

Milwaukee Brewers – Magic number to clinch NL Central is 4. They lead the St. Louis Cardinals by seven games with nine to play.  Their magic number to clinch home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs is 8.

Arizona Diamondbacks – Magic number to clinch NL West is 5. They lead the San Francisco Giants by five games with nine to play.

Atlanta Braves – Magic number to clinch NL Wild Card is 6.  They lead the Cardinals and Giants by four games with nine to play.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

New York Yankees – Magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 5, magic number to cilnch AL East is 7.  Magic number to clinch home-field advantage through the first two rounds of the playoffs is 8. With 11 games left, the Yankees lead the Boston Red Sox by 4.5 games and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by 6.5.

Detroit Tigers – Clinched AL Central. Magic number to clinch home-field advantage in the first round is 9.

Texas Rangers – Magic number to clinch AL West is 6. They lead the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim by 4.5 games with 9 to play.

Boston Red Sox – Magic number to clinch AL Wild Card is 9. They lead the Devil Rays by two games with 10 to play. The Angels are four back in the Wild Card, and the Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland will both be eliminated with their next loss or the next Red Sox win.
