On Sunday, September 16, 2012, the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers raced
in the Geico 400 at
Chicagoland Speedway. This race was the first race
in the 2012 Chase for the Cup and several drivers were looking to make
statements. Brad Keselowski certainly made his mark by narrowly beating Jimmie Johnson to take the victory and the top spot in the standings. Kasey Kahne was also one of the biggest
winners of the night. He had made the Chase by securing a wild card
slot and going into this race, he was 11th in the standings. After his
third place finish, he jumped to fifth overall in the standings.
It was not such a good day for one Chase contender. Jeff Gordon hit the wall
during the race and was forced to go to the garage for repairs. Though
he did make it back out, he was not able to make up any ground and
finished in 35th. This placed him at the bottom of the standings for the
Chase drivers. He is now 47 points behind Keselowski and 21 points
behind Matt Kenseth, who is in 11th.
In addition to grabbing the first win in the Chase for the Cup, Brad
Keselowski Racing got an exciting victory in the NASCAR Camping World
Truck Series. Ryan Blaney, who was driving
for BKR, took the victory at the American Ethanol 200 at Iowa Speedway
on Saturday, September 15, 2012. The 18 year old became the youngest
driver to ever win a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. His father,
Dave Blaney was there to see his son win his first big NASCAR race.
Most of the drivers competing in the Chase had a pretty good race. It
is looking like it will be a great Chase this season and I am looking
forward to seeing what happens next week. It has been a great season for
the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series so far and it is looking like the Chase
will be great too. There is still a lot of racing left in the season and
still a lot of time for great action. Hopefully, fans will be seeing
both next weekend.
Kristin Watt has been a NASCAR Winston Cup, now Sprint Cup, fan for
as long as she can remember starting way back when she was a little
girl and her mother would sit on the couch with her every Sunday during
the season to watch the races. Back then, they were fans of Bill Elliott
and newcomer Davey Allison.
