Alex Morgan Has Heroic Moment in Epic 4-3 Win Over Canada: Fan's Take
Three times Christine Sinclair gave Canada the lead and three times the U.S women's soccer team came back. Then, in the 123rd minute, Alex Morgan became an Olympic hero with a remarkable header beating Canada 4-3, and sending every American watching into hysteria.What I liked about Morgan's post-game interview with NBC Sports is that her youth and emotion showed, and she was already talking about Japan. Everyone on the U.S. women's soccer team, deep down, probably wanted to face Japan to set up a rematch against the club that beat them in the 2011 World Cup final with penalty kicks.
The last time Canada beat a U.S. women's soccer team, Alex Morgan was eleven years old. Morgan's header came seconds before the second overtime was drawing to a close. The match was so back-and-fourth, watching penalty kicks would've been excruciating. I can't say we would have won if it had gone to penalty kicks; Canada is definitely the best opponent Team USA has faced so far in the London Olympics.
Canada matched Team USA's speed and they were surgical the way they jammed up the passing lanes. Team USA dominated play early, but created only a few scoring opportunities.
Canada's Christine Sinclair has to be the most disenchanted Olympic athlete in London, right now. Astonishingly, Sinclair notched a hat trick and the three goals in regulation were the most against the Americans since May 2008.
There were moments in the semi-final when Sinclair would suddenly be behind all the American defenders. She was the most aggressive player I've seen in the tournament, maybe second to only Abby Wambach who had a goal. It was Wambach's fifth goal in five games in the tournament.
It'll be interesting to see how Hope Solo recovers from what was her weakest performance thus far in the Olympics. It was Christine Sinclair vs. Hope Solo, and Sinclair clearly won…performance wise, but not on the scoreboard. You can't put it all on Solo though, especially Sinclair's third score that was header that just sneaked into the left post.
This semi-final was epic. Canada is going home with a loss, but they pushed Team USA to an exhausting brink and just came up short. Megan Rapinoe, with her bending corner kick in the 55th and her 30 footer in the 71st, was sensational for America. She deserved an NBC Sports post-interview. NBC only spoke to Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan.
Something tells me that Morgan's winning header is just the beginning of a long line of incredible highlights she'll have in her already exceptional career.
