VW Beetle gets a “Shark Week” tie-in with shark cage edition
If you're a fan of the Discovery Channel's annual "Shark Week" celebration of bloodthirsty undersea killers, you know that shark observation cages come in rectangles that never seem to have quite enough bars. This year, Discovery and new sponsor Volkswagen will add a new twist to the adventure with this, a cage designed to look like a VW Beetle -- or as sharks may call it, "meals on wheels."VW and Discovery say they built the cage -- using VW Beetle parts, including tires and a Beetle steering wheel --with marine biologist and shark expert Luke Tipple. During Shark Week starting Aug. 12, the channel will air three one-minute ads showing how the Beetle came to be, and how well it survives rolling along the ocean floor.
Even Volkswagen admits there's no real connection between sharks and the Bug, but the custom cage still seems smarter than just putting its ads around a bunch of shark-hunting documentaries. But it's one car I have no desire whatsoever to test drive.
