Shark closes beaches

As many as 3,000 people were asked to leave the water at Nauset Beach in Orleans Saturday after a
lifeguard sighted a Great White shark about 100 to 150 yards offshore, Orleans Harbormaster Dawson Farber IV said.
Farber said members of his staff confirmed the sighting at about 2 p.m. and estimated the shark to be 12 – 14 feet long. The shark appeared to swim away from the beach area, Farber said, but he could not be certain that it had not gone into deeper water and remained nearby.
The beach was closed for swimming the remainder of Saturday. Farber said he will review the situation on Sunday morning and decide whether it is safe to reopen the beach.
Shark sightings aren’t unusual on the eastern shore of Cape Cod. One was seen off neighboring Chatham as recently as Tuesday morning. George Breen, a spotter pilot for the Cape Cod Shark Hunters, said he saw a shark in Nauset Inlet just days ago, one of four he has seen in the area this year.
