2 Arrested In Border Killing

February 12 -- SAN DIEGO (AP) - A man suspected of killing a U.S. Border Patrol agent last year by running him over with a drug-loaded Hummer was arrested Wednesday near a Mexican resort town, the FBI said.
Mexican federal agents arrested Jesus Navarro Montes, 22, near Zihuatenejo in an operation
coordinated with the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI said. The U.S. government is seeking his extradition on drug charges.
FBI agents in San Diego want to question Navarro, a Mexican citizen, about the January 2008 death of Border Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar in southeastern California's Imperial Sand Dunes, where marijuana smugglers have long mixed in with recreational dune riders.
Aguilar was killed while trying to lay spike strips to stop the drug-filled vehicle from returning to Mexico. The driver then sped a short distance over the sands to Mexico.
Mexican authorities arrested and charged Navarro with migrant smuggling soon after Aguilar's death, but released him in June, prompting outrage from the U.S government. Mexican authorities said the U.S. didn't seek Navarro's extradition until a week after he was freed.
Darrell Foxworth, an FBI spokesman, said he didn't know any circumstances of Navarro's capture.
The FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection offered a reward up to $350,000 for information leading to Navarro's arrest.
Aguilar's widow, Erica, welcomed news of the arrest, said T.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, who spoke with her Wednesday night.
"She's happy that he's in custody but nervous that something will go wrong in the extradition process," said Bonner, whose union represents Border Patrol agents. "I would feel much better if he were inside the U.S."
After Aguilar's death, the Border Patrol built a 13-mile fence that stretches across the largest sand dunes in the U.S. The sands extend about five miles into Mexico. Until last year, the border was almost invisible, marked by 15-foot concrete obelisks spaced far apart, and riders veered back and forth.
