A kitten was born having only one eye in the place the nose supposed to
be. People who saw the pictured on the media started blogging and
writing articles about a "strange" creature born. This is also because
the media made a huge fuss about it. Scientists were aware of the
condition the kitten had, and unfortunately it
had it in the most severe
of its cases, that's why the kitten died a day after she was born.
Holoprosencephaly is an actual cephalic disorder that is also applicable
to humans. This is a disorder characterized by the failure of the
prosencephalon (the forebrain of the embryo) to develop.
Holoprosencephaly is caused by a failure of the embryo's forebrain to
divide to form bilateral cerebral hemispheres (the left and right halves
of the brain), causing defects in the development of the face and in
brain structure and function.
This disorder comes in three
different classifications: Alobar, Semilobar, Lobar. Severe, moderately
severe, the least severe respectively.
The most severe of the
facial defects is cyclopia (Cy Kitten), an abnormality characterized by
the development of a single eye, located in the area normally occupied
by the root of the nose, and a missing nose or a nose in the form of a
proboscis (a tubular appendage) located above the eye. The condition is
also referred to as cyclocephaly or synophthalmia and is very rare.
The direct causes of this defect is not yet known, but scientists
discovered that genetic factors play a big role in the alteration and in
causing this severe case of abnormality.
