New York Jets owner Woody Johnson said today he'd take a Mitt Romney victory on Election Day over a winning season for his "Gang Green" football team.
"Well I think you always have to put country first," the Romney campaign finance co-chair told Bloomberg TV
today. "So I think it's very, very important that not only for us but
particularly for our kids and grandkids that this election come off with
Mitt Romney and Ryan as president and
vice-president."
The news comes less than 24 hours after Jets fans watched the San Francisco 49ers poleaxe the home team, 34-0, on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
Johnson, who also acts as the chairman of Romney's New York campaign, has raised millions for the Republican while becoming a good friend during the past few months.
"Mitt loves the fact that Woody Johnson gets around town on a Razor scooter, " a mutual pal told the New York Observer
in July. "He finds that hysterical. This is a guy that takes a
helicopter from Teterboro to 34th Street and gets on his Razor scooter. I
mean, the irony!"
Among the other very public donations made by the Jets owner this year: A
new contract for quarterback Mark Sanchez that could pay the
fourth-year pro as much as $40.5 million over the next three seasons.
The 2-2 Jets are No. 24 in rushing yards and 26th in passing yards, according to ESPN.
