Former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop and Hall of Fame legend Ozzie Smith is among the best defensive players in the history of Major League Baseball.
During his career, Smith won thirteen consecutive Gold Glove Awards
between the years of 1980 and 1992 and was selected to fifteen All-Star
Games. Smith was a career .262 hitter and helped the Cardinals win the
1982 World Series.
With all of those accomplishments throughout his career, Smith collected a lot of trophies, plaques, and memorabilia.
According to reports,
Smith has decided to sell some of this memorabilia, including those
thirteen Gold Glove Awards and over one hundred pieces of other
memorabilia.
Smith released a statement regarding his decision to sell his personal treasures and mementos of accomplishment, which is being done for estate planning.
"I am honored to share a portion of the memorabilia from my professional
baseball career with fans and collectors. My family and I have decided
together which of my pieces to keep and which to share. I will forever
cherish every experience associated with earning these awards that I
shared with the Cardinal Nation and the baseball community. I hope those
who are passionate about collecting and preserving such items will gain
a similar measure of joy through their ownership."
Along with the Gold Gloves, Smith will also be auctioning eleven All-Star game rings and his 1995 Roberto Clemente Award.
The Wizard, who was not only famous for his glove, but also his sunny
disposition and the famous back-flip that he would display on opening
day and at All-Star games, will surely draw some interest from
collectors and baseball historians.
Hopefully Smith is not selling his stuff because he is struggling
financially, but people go bonkers for baseball memorabilia. Knowing
how much Cardinals fans love their team and favorite players, do not be
surprised if these items bring Ozzie a pretty nice chunk of change.
